Gerrard slip lets Chelsea back in race

An untimely slip by Steven Gerrard helped Chelsea claim a 2-0 win over English Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield to reignite the London club’s title ambitions.

南宁桑拿

The Liverpool captain lost his footing in first-half injury time on Sunday, enabling Demba Ba to run through and score, with Willian adding a late second as Jose Mourinho’s side moved to within two points of the summit.

The result brought Liverpool’s 11-game winning streak to an end and, although it resurrected Chelsea’s title chances, the chief beneficiaries could be Manchester City.

With a superior goal difference, Manuel Pellegrini’s team have an advantage.

Mourinho, who travelled separately from his squad because he is ill, will now turn his attention to Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, with the tie in the balance at 0-0.

Anfield was already simmering when Luis Garcia, scorer of the decisive goal when these sides met in the 2005 Champions League semi-finals, was paraded to fans before kick-off, raising the noise levels even further.

Mourinho had made seven changes to his starting XI, awarding a full debut to 20-year-old Czech centre-back Tamas Kalas, and the visitors set out to spoil the game right from kick-off.

They were dallying over free-kicks within minutes of the whistle being blown, while Gerrard at one point had to wrench the ball from Mourinho’s grasp as the Chelsea manager attempted to prevent a quick throw-in.

Chelsea were the first side to threaten, however, with home goalkeeper Simon Mignolet obliged to parry a shot from Ashley Cole.

At the other end, Luis Suarez teed up Philippe Coutinho to volley into the side-netting and then found Mamadou Sakho with a drilled cross, only for the Frenchman to hoist the ball over the bar from close range.

Suarez also curled an effort over, but Chelsea finished the half strongly, and after the unmarked Kalas had headed badly wide from a corner, Gerrard’s nightmare moment let the visitors in.

After letting a pass from Sakho run under his foot, the England captain slipped as he tried to recover. As Anfield gasped, Ba stole in, racing through and calmly threading the ball past Mignolet.

Liverpool resumed their assault on the Chelsea goal after the interval, but a deflected Gerrard effort that Mark Schwarzer saved easily was the best they could muster in the early stages.

Rodgers responded by sending on the fit-again Daniel Sturridge and Schwarzer was obliged to exert himself fully moments later, plunging to his left to repel a Joe Allen volley.

Suarez had one last chance in injury time, when a punch from Schwarzer fell straight to him, but the goalkeeper palmed the Uruguayan’s shot away.

Chelsea had the last word, with Fernando Torres racing clear and unselfishly teeing up fellow substitute Willian for an easy tap-in that Mourinho celebrated by thumping his chest on the touchline.

Wine could be good for kidneys: study

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

For those who already have kidney disease, wine might protect their hearts.

南宁桑拿

According to a University of Colorado-Denver researcher, people who drank up to one glass of wine a day had a 37 per cent lower prevalence of chronic kidney disease than those who drank no wine at all. And those who already had chronic kidney disease were 29 per cent less likely than teetotalers to have cardiovascular disease if they drank less than a glass a day.

The researcher, Dr Tapan Mehta, used 2003-2006 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on 5852 individuals, 1031 of whom had chronic kidney disease. He presented preliminary findings at a meeting of the National Kidney Foundation.

The findings back up previous studies that also suggest that a single glass of red wine a day for women – up to two glasses for men – help protect your heart, said Dr Leslie Spry, a spokesman for the foundation.

It may be the alcohol and antioxidants in red wine boost levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and protect against artery damage, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Mehta’s study didn’t differentiate between red and white wine.

“It doesn’t surprise me that, as we learn that wine is protective to the heart, we’re seeing the same effect on the kidneys,” said Dr Joel Topf, a Detroit area nephrologist and president of the scientific advisory board of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

But think twice before you run out to purchase a case of your favourite wine.

Topf notes more research must be done to clearly establish cause and effect. It’s not clear, for example, whether those who were sickly or had kidney disease had avoided alcohol because of their health concerns or whether the avoidance led to health problems.

More importantly, too much wine can push up blood pressure – a major cause of chronic kidney disease.

Other Woman tops US box office

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

A femme-fuelled comedy beat a superhero blockbuster at the box office this weekend.

南宁桑拿

After holding the top position for three weeks, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been topped by The Other Woman for the No. 1 spot.

Fox’s revenge comedy, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, debuted with $US24.7 million ($A26.69 million), while Disney-Marvel’s Captain America, led by Chris Evans, grossed $US16 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $US225 million.

The PG-13 rating of Nick Cassavetes directed The Other Woman – about three ladies wronged by a three-timing spouse played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of Game of Thrones – helped it draw a larger audience, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst of box-office tracker Rentrak.

“The rating was perfect,” he said.

“If you are going for the mainstream audience who is looking for something that has a little bit of an edge, but not too much, you can hit that sweet spot and draw a large audience.”

The release date couldn’t have been better, Dergarabedian noted.

“This was the perfect time to release this film, between the success of Captain America and before the official start of the summer movie season with Spider-Man 2.”

Hollywood hasn’t yet seen a comedy do especially well at the box office in 2014 since Ride Along, which was released in January. Domestically, Jason Bateman’s Bad Words made only $US7.7 million overall. Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club brought in $US16 million domestically. Most of his films have grossed over $US40 million domestically. And Marlon Wayans’ sequel A Haunted House 2 opened with $US8.8 million, drastically down from the original’s $US18 million debut.

“Sometimes it’s about casting,” Dergarabedian said.

“When you have Cameron Diaz in a comedy like this, it’s hard not to knock it out of the park. This film is right in her wheelhouse. This is what she does best.”

While Diaz’s last film, thriller The Counselor, grossed only $US17 million domestically last year, her foul-mouthed 2011 comedy Bad Teacher earned over $US100 million stateside.

Captain America has now hit over $645 million globally, surpassing its 2011 original The First Avenger, which earned $370 million. The sequel is the highest-grossing April release ever.

Sony’s faith-based Heaven Is for Real, starring Greg Kinnear, held the third-place position with $13.8 million after opening in the same slot last weekend behind leaders Captain America and Fox’s animated Rio 2, which drifted down to fourth place with $US13.7 million.

Relativity Media’s action crime drama Brick Mansions, starring the late Paul Walker, was No. 5 with $9.6 million. The film was one of the last Walker completed before he died in a car accident in November. To finish Fast & Furious 7, which will be released April 2015, Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody Walker, have stepped in to complete their brother’s action scenes.

It’s a solid debut after the film was pushed back from its original release date in February.

Johnny Depp’s sci-fi disappointment Transcendence dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 in its second weekend, earning $4.1 million. The Warner Bros. film is Depp’s third consecutive flop after 2013’s Western The Lone Ranger, in which he played Tonto, and 2012 quirky vampire flick Dark Shadows.

Also opening this weekend was Lionsgate’s The Quiet Ones, starring Jared Harris (Mad Men) as an Oxford professor who recruits students to conduct an experiment to prove supernatural abilities exist. The horror film’s take was a mere $4 million.

Next weekend, Sony-Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will make its domestic debut. The 18 weeks of summer constitutes on average 40 per cent of the year’s box office earnings, Dergarabedian said.

Spider-Man 2 has already premiered internationally in locations like South Korea and Russia. In its second weekend of international release, it made $132 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through to Sunday at US and Canadian theatres, according to Rentrak. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday:

1. The Other Woman, $US24.7 million.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, $US16 million.

3. Heaven Is for Real, $US13.8 million.

4. Rio 2, $US13.7 million.

5. Brick Mansions, $US9.6 million.

6. Transcendence, $US4.1 million.

7. The Quiet Ones, $US4 million.

8. Bears, $US3.6 million.

9. Divergent, $US3.6 million.

10. A Haunted House 2, $US3.3 million.

Cam wins Gold Logie, Keddie bags silvers

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Jovial The Block host Scott Cam has won the coveted Gold Logie and prevented Asher Keddie from making a clean sweep of the awards night.

南宁桑拿

Cam was the hot favourite to win Gold on Sunday following a betting plunge a few weeks ago.

He said the highlight of winning was getting to kiss pop princess Kylie Minogue who presented the award.

“I kissed Kylie Minogue, that’s pretty cool,” Cam said when he stepped up to the microphone.

“It’s unbelievable, it’s 11 o’clock at the Logies and I’m still sober.”

Offspring star and last year’s winner Asher Keddie was in line for a hat-trick after taking out the Silver Logies for Most Popular Actress and Most Outstanding Actress.

But Cam, who earlier won a Silver Logie for Most Popular Presenter, was standing in her way.

It’s the first time he has been nominated for Gold which is determined by a public vote.

The Nine Network personality beat comedian comedian Andy Lee, Keddie, presenter Carrie Bickmore and actors Essie Davis and Stephen Peacocke.

However Lee didn’t go home empty handed.

His comedy show Hamish And Andy’s Gap Year Asia won the Most Popular Light Entertainment Program.

Even Peacocke got the chance to take the stage as a winner after Home And Away won Most Popular Drama Program.

Cam has hosted The Block for Nine since 2010 and it’s one of the highest-rating reality shows on TV.

Already one series has aired this year and another season is in production at its new location in High St, Prahran.

Cam said his three children would be proud of him winning the Gold Logie and would be at home “going berko”.

“I can’t believe it, I really can’t believe it.”

Cam promised to use his carpenter’s skills to good use and hollow out the bottom of the Logie and “make it into a stubby holder”.

Keddie’s two Silver Logie wins are a timely publicity boost for Offspring which returns on May 14.

Her character Nina Proudman is now a single mother after the shock death of Patrick Reid at the end of the fourth season.

“It feels so great that because of where we left off in series four there is so much joy and hope and hilarity in series five, which is kind of surprising,” she told reporters.

An overwhelmed Keddie said she couldn’t think straight after getting a vote of confidence from her fans (Most Popular) and her peers (Most Outstanding).

She has now won five Logies in two years.

She said she wanted to dedicate her second Silver Logie to her “beautiful, incredibly talented and inspiring friend and colleague” the late Wendy Hughes.

“I’d like to dedicate this to her because she is a woman and an actress that I have admired since I was a little girl.”

Chris Lilley won most popular actor for his character as the obnoxious private school girl Ja’mie.

Lilley wasn’t able to collect his Logie in person, sending a videotaped message, saying he was in London promoting his latest comedy, Jonah From Tonga.

But he did send one of “Ja’mie’s” friends Kwami (actor Albert Mambo) to accept the award.

WA remains Australia’s strongest economy

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Western Australia remains the nation’s best performing economy but the Northern Territory is a close second.

南宁桑拿

The Top End is leading the way when it comes to economic activity, due to strong growth in construction, according to CommSec’s quarterly State of the States report.

South Australia and Tasmania were the weakest performing states, while NSW came in third, followed by Queensland in fourth place and Victoria in fifth.

Every three months, CommSec uses eight key indicators to rank the states and territories – economic growth, retail spending, equipment investment, unemployment, construction work done, population growth, housing finance and dwelling commencements.

CommSec chief economist Craig James said the rebalancing of the Australian economy away from mining investment would soon cause a shake-up in the rankings.

“Western Australia continues to lead the rankings of best performing economies but in the latest quarter there was little to separate it from the Northern Territory economy,” he said.

“The mining construction boom is over, replaced by the home construction boom.

“As a result, winners and losers will change across Australia, not just industries but also state and territory economies.”

NSW lifted from fifth to third place following improvements in its economic growth, business investment, population growth and dwelling starts.

NSW is now the strongest state for new housing construction, with starts over 39 per cent above decade averages, Mr James said.

“The outlook for housing construction continues to strengthen, underpinned by low interest rates and strong demand by investors,” Mr James said.

The jobs market was strongest in the Northern Territory and ACT and weakest in South Australia, where the jobless rate is up almost 28 per cent on the decade average, Mr James said.

He said the outlook for the Tasmanian and South Australian economies remained challenging.

“The hope is that property investors will soon switch attention away from NSW and Victoria to more affordable housing sectors,” he said.

Aussies stung by high superannuation fees: report

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Research by the Grattan Institute finds Australians pay about $20 billion in fees each year.

南宁桑拿

That’s three times more than the median paid by OECD economies where superannuation pools are much smaller.

The analysis is timely as a debate rages over the need to lift the retirement age amid rising costs to the federal budget.

The report’s author, economist Jim Minifie, says there is anargument that the complexity of Australia’s superannuation regulations increases the cost of the system.

“If this is true, it reveals the urgent need to reduce regulation,” he says in the report released on Sunday.

However, the wide variation in fees charged by funds suggests super businesses are choosing to charge higher imposts.

Dr Minifie also believes recent reforms will not help much.

MySuper – a more uniform set of products for people who do notactively choose their funds – makes funds easier to compare, but does little to relieve the pressure of fees.

Dr Minifie says fees should be at least halved.

He believes the cost could be substantially reduced if thegovernment selected a small number of default funds every few years with a tender based on fees.

All new job starters would pay into these funds, unless they optout and choose their own.

To push down fees for existing accounts, tax time at the end of June should also be superannuation choice time.

A new step in the tax return process should encourage taxpayersto compare their current fund with the low-cost winners of the default tender.

Dr Minifie concedes these measures may reduce the revenues ofsuper funds.

“More importantly, they will reduce the sting of high fees,” he said.

Oppositions defends record on super reforms

Opposition finance spokesman Tony Burke has defended the previous Labor government super reforms amid claims Australians are paying excess super fees.

Labor has defended its superannuation reforms in the wake of a report that Australians are still paying too much in fees.

The previous Labor government passed Stronger Super legislation in 2012 to simplify default products, cut administrative costs and improve governance of funds.

The changes are being phased in until 2017.

At the time the government predicted the reforms would reduce the average fees paid by members by up to 40 per cent.

“But fee cuts of that size do not appear at all likely,” the report said.

Opposition finance spokesman Tony Burke there was a need to be vigilant on super fees.

Mr Burke said the reforms were still working their way through the system.

“To expect the cumulative impact of these structural changes to happen instantly would be a stretch,” he told ABC Radio on Monday.

Watts, Schreiber plan wedding: report

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Australian actress Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber are reportedly planning to tie the knot after nine years and two children together.

南宁桑拿

A friend of the actors has told RadarOnline that the couple are ready for marriage.

“While Naomi and Liev have had their ups and downs, including a cancelled New Year’s Eve wedding right before 2008, they’ve finally worked out their differences and are rethinking marriage,” the friend said.

According to the friend the couple have grown close after Watts, 45, was widely panned for starring in the Diana biopic.

“Liev really admired how Naomi rose above the flak she got for Diana – a role he really thought she’d win awards for,” the source said.

Earlier this month, Watts spoke for the first time about her disappointing role as Princess Diana and has compared the film to a “sinking ship”.

The British-born, Australian raised actress told Harper’s Bazaar magazine that taking up the role as the late Princess in Diana, which was mauled by critics, was a risk that didn’t pay off.

But she blamed the film rather than her own performance, saying it took a different direction to the one she’d hoped for.

“I got seduced by the fantastic character,” Watts said at the time.

The 2013 movie Diana told the story of the last two years of Diana’s life including her romances with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and mogul Dodi Fayed.

Watts and Schreiber have been together since 2005 and have two sons, Sasha and Sam.

They met a few years before they started dating, but it was the 2005 Met Gala in New York City which was the catalyst for their romance.

“I was a lot more ballsy than I would ever normally be. He got up to say he was leaving, and I was like, ‘Oh, s***’. So I said something cheeky. ‘Don’t you want my digits?’ It made him laugh,” Watts said previously.

“He texted me saying, ‘Would you like to go for a drink right now?’ And I said, ‘No, I’ll meet you for breakfast tomorrow’.”

The couple appeared together in the 2006 movie The Painted Veil.

New Serbia cabinet to press EU bid

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Serbia’s new centre-right government led by Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has been sworn in and is expected to push for the country’s EU membership and tackle an ailing economy.

南宁桑拿

Vucic’s Serbian Progressive party (SNS) was given a mandate after a landslide victory in March elections called after EU membership talks in the wake of a landmark accord with breakaway Kosovo last year.

Out of 228 deputies present at the SNS-dominated parliament, 198 MPs voted for Vucic’s cabinet, 23 were against it and seven abstained.

“I am ready to undertake the implementation of reforms as I am convinced that if things remain the same, the consequences will be catastrophic,” Vucic told parliament on Sunday.

In his three-hour speech before the vote, Vucic said the priority of his 19-member cabinet would be the reform of Serbia’s outdated economy, the reduction of the budget deficit and moves to accelerate Belgrade’s bid to join the European Union.

“The EU is not an ideal union but it is the best union of the states that exists nowadays and we belong there,” Vucic said.

“If we work hard, I am convinced that Serbia can become an EU member by the end of this decade,” he said.

Vucic will discuss the first moves of his cabinet with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who will visit Belgrade on Monday.

High on the agenda will be the resumption of talks with Pristina on a further normalisation of relations between the two former foes, a key condition for Serbia’s EU membership hopes.

Vucic said he would personally lead Belgrade’s delegation in the EU-sponsored talks with Pristina, expected to continue in coming weeks.

Serbia – the largest country to emerge from the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, with a population of 7.2 million – has to reform antiquated labour and other economic laws and cut down on bureaucracy.

More than 20 per cent of the workforce is unemployed, and those with jobs struggle to survive on an average monthly salary of 350 euros ($A520).

Liverpool title surge halted, Atletico roll on

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

AS Roma stayed in touch with Italian leaders Juventus while in the Bundesliga Bayern Munich, long since crowned champions, warmed up for their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid with a 5-2 victory over Werder Bremen.

南宁桑拿

In France, Paris St Germain squandered the chance to wrap up the Ligue 1 title when they could only draw with lowly Sochaux.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Leaders Liverpool lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea and Manchester City won 2-0 at Crystal Palace to blow the fluctuating title race wide open once again.

Goals by Demba Ba and Willian added the gloss to an outstanding Chelsea defensive performance and ended Liverpool’s 11-match winning streak, severely denting their hopes of a first league title for 24 years.

Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure scored in the first half to seal third-placed City’s victory at Palace and Manuel Pellegrini’s team ended the weekend three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand and a better goal difference.

Chelsea, who played a weakened team at Anfield with this week’s Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid in mind, are second, two points adrift of Liverpool with two games left in the season.

Manchester United crushed Norwich City 4-0 at Old Trafford to give caretaker manager Ryan Giggs the perfect start after taking the reins from David Moyes who was sacked on Tuesday.

Sunderland climbed out of the relegation zone, above Norwich, after a 4-0 thrashing of Cardiff City who look doomed.

LA LIGA

Atletico Madrid stayed rock solid at the top after a 1-0 victory at Valencia – Raul Garcia’s header just before halftime being enough to take them to 88 points, a new club record.

Barcelona, playing two days after the death of former coach Tito Vilanova, earned an emotional win at Villarreal where they came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with Lionel Messi sealing the victory late on after two own goals had allowed Barca back into the match.

Barcelona are four points behind Atletico with three games left while Real Madrid, who beat Osasuna on Saturday, are six points behind with a game more to play than Atletico or Barca.

Athletic Bilbao strengthened their hold on fourth place with a 3-1 victory over Sevilla.

BUNDESLIGA

Veteran striker Claudio Pizarro scored twice in an explosive second half to help Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich crush Werder Bremen 5-2 after the Bavarians had twice been behind.

Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery were also on target for Bayern who had won only one of their previous four league games.

Second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have already secured their Champions League spot for next season, needed the skill and scoring ability of Marco Reus, who hit one goal and set up the other, to come from behind and draw 2-2 at Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen hung on to fourth place that leads to the Champions League qualifying rounds with VfL Wolfsburg a point behind in fifth. Third-placed Schalke lost 1-0 at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

SERIE A

Second-placed AS Roma kept the Serie A title race going when they beat AC Milan 2-0 with goals from Miralem Pjanic and Gervinho, their ninth league win in a row.

The win took Roma on to 85 points from 35 games, five behind Juventus who visit relegation-threatened Sassuolo on Monday.

Roma’s win meant that Juventus, who at one point held a 14-point lead, must wait at least another week to wrap up the title.

LIGUE ONE

Paris St Germain failed to clinch the title on Sunday when Thiago Silva’s own goal handed Sochaux a second-half equaliser and a 1-1 draw.

Edinson Cavani scored in the 24th minute to raise hopes that Laurent Blanc’s side could clinch their second successive league

title on their visit to third-bottom Sochaux.

Dimitar Berbatov’s double strike on Saturday helped second-placed Monaco crush bottom club Ajaccio 4-1 to keep the championship race alive.

PSG, who won the French League Cup by beating Olympique Lyon 2-1 last weekend, have 83 points with three games remaining. Monaco are eight points adrift.

NETHERLANDS

Ajax Amsterdam captured their fourth successive Dutch League title, and 33rd overall, with a 1-1 draw at Heracles Almelo on Sunday. Lasse Schone’s early goal set up Ajax for an afternoon of celebration but Simon Cziommer’s equaliser in the 22nd minute ensured a nervy finish as Ajax opened up an unassailable lead at the top of the table to seal the title with one match remaining.

The draw moved Ajax to 70 points, out of the reach of the chasing pack.

Aussies being stung by super fees: Grattan

Written by admin on  Categories: 佛山桑拿网

Australians with superannuation accounts are paying three times more in fees – about $1100 a year – than other comparable countries.

南宁桑拿

Over time those fees reduce account balances at retirement by more than 15 per cent.

Research by the Grattan Institute finds Australians pay about $20 billion in fees each year.
